Great find on that article! I'm so glad that there are people out there performing experiments to expose snobs, be they wine snobs or art snobs.
I don't think that article is about being a snob at all. I think is about a basic human nature to want to like what other people like. Capitalism by no mistake is a gage for people to find out what other people like and value. Value is a construct of a complicated economic system coupled with personal need and desire. I think what art collectors are trying to figure out is how to match up their interest in a work with its value in the marketplace, because buying art is not just about buying art, its often seen as an investment. Buying art is one of the premium luxuries and many, even the wealthy want to justify that as an investment.
But all this doesn't mean the system isn't screwy. The author could have further investigated the wine comparison to include the new popularity of wine even over beer, as a relationship to the drop in the price of wine.
